The Plaza Café -- located behind the movie theater in Southampton -- was the first new Hamptons restaurant to receive three stars from both Newsday and The New York Times in 1998. This upscale New American spot offers diners solid culinary fare served up by one of the East End's rising culinary stars. Owner/chef Douglas Gulija's menu focuses on his specialty: fresh seasonal seafood. Gulija's signature dish, Shepherd's Pie, is an innovative seafood extravaganza; local lobster, shrimp, sweet corn and shiitakes baked beneath a flaky chive-potato crust. The Plaza Café's décor is sophisticated and relaxed while "its food makes it a standout," according to Joanne Starkey of The New York Times. Joanne Starkey, of The New York Times finds red/bar brasserie, " . . . the epitome of cool, crisp Hampton's dining yet simultaneously smiles sweetly of yesterday."  Managed by partners David Loewenberg and Kirk Basnight, red/bar swiftly became a coveted reservation following its much anticipated June '98 opening. red/bar's recipe for success is centered on chef Erik Nodeland's smart French-inspired American Brasserie menu served in handsomely appointed surroundings by a professional, friendly staff. In the dining room, soft candlelight is reflected in the multi-pane windows that ring the room. Accented by crisp white table linens, bentwood chairs and potted palms, the decor is sophisticated, yet welcoming. When they first opened red/bar, Basnight and Loewenberg aimed to deliver a quality year-round restaurant. They've clearly hit their mark with red/bar's understated elegance, outstanding culinary fare and lively social scene.
