Fair Harbor has attracted many "refugees" from Kismet. Much of the under 30 crowd has migrated from Ocean Beach (the land of NO) to Kismet (the land of YES). As a result, much of the 30's and 40's crowd has moved up the beach to Fair Harbor, especially singles. One house is even called "Kismet East" because it was started by former Kismetites.
The annual "Back to the Beach Party", held each year at Rascal's in Manhattan in early May, is hosted by Fair Harbor's own veteran resident, Bob Jaffe, of Mixed Signals on the bay.
Even with famous Fair Harbor party host "Mitch", now married with child, the major parties still go on, hosted by others, and still a lot of fun. The great Labor Day Beach party was hosted by a dozen houses and provided some "Kodak" moments to be shown 30 years from now to the grand kids when they express disbelief that Grandma and Grandpa were so wild in their youth. Over the extended Fourth of July weekend, Fair Harborites can look forward to a selection of parties, including the "30th Annual Christmas/Chanukah Party", on Friday night.
Many of the younger residents will be making the mile walk or bike ride to Kismet's annual July 4th Block Party on East Lighthouse. Children will be checking out the parades in Ocean Beach and Kismet.
In addition to the singles crowd in Fair Harbor, there are also many families. Quite a few of them are young-ish couples with young children. The major ritual of the weekend is the Saturday night sunset dock party. Fire Islanders from Fair Harbor as well as surrounding communities meet at the dock during the hour or so before sunset to meet, shmooze, scope out the new faces, enjoy a drink, and just enjoy the gorgeous sunset.
